We’ve all pursued a goal or status without fully understanding what it requires. When James and John confidently answered “We can,” they were looking at victory, not sacrifice. To them, stepping up meant sharing in earthly glory. To Jesus, “drinking the cup” meant enduring deep trial, sacrifice, and ultimate selflessness. Ambition itself isn’t the problem, but misplaced ambition leads straight to burnout and disillusionment. Before asking for a higher place, take a moment to reflect on the cost. Are you truly prepared to drink the cup?
